Rising world population is expected to Increasing demand for quality food\, in particular processed food. It is expected that the middle class (consumers of processed food) in the BRIC countries will double in size over the coming 5 years. Similar developments take place in the so called CIVETS countries (Colombia\, Indonesia\, Vietnam\, Egypt\, Turkey and South-Africa). The expected increase in demand for (processed) food\, combined with rising food prices exerts high pressure on the whole food chain. The pressure within the chain increases even more when concerns related to health\, hygiene\, the environment\, water\, sustainability\, waste\, labor standards\, animal welfare\, etc.\, end up in tighter governmental regulation and consumer preferences. The sensitivity within the food-chain is very high\, as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) describes\: “The key is to strengthen each and every link in the complex process of food reaching the consumer - from the way it is grown or raised\, to how it is collected\, processed\, packaged\, sold and consumed. One weak link can mean the whole food chain collapsing. Stakeholders include producers (farmers\, fishermen)\, food processors\, transport operators\, distributors (both retail and wholesale) and consumers\, as well as governments obliged to protect public health.”Topics to address
